Pills, Pills, Pills! How Will We Find All of Our Medications in Mexico?

Dammit! I already take thirty-eight pills a day! They barely fit in my weekly pillboxes, and now I have to add one more each day!”

This is an excerpt from my novel Mexico For Better or For Worse. While the story of expats Jake and Lindsay is fiction, it depicts many people's fears about moving to Mexico permanently. One of the most common questions I receive is, "How will I find the medication I need?" Jake and Lindsay discover that it's possible in most cases.

Jake had the stock bottles for his vitamins, minerals, including magnesium for restless legs and sleep, fish oil, CoQ10, and other nutritional supplements, plus eight prescription medication bottles lined up in an arch, a rainbow of colors, on the Equipale dining table on their outdoor patio. His prescription meds included carbidopa/levodopa for Parkinson’s, l-methylfolate to aid in depression and Parkinson’s disease, a mood stabilizer and an antidepressant for bipolar disorder, one anti-cholesterol med, one to relieve urinary difficulty, and one for acid reflux. He had no desire ever to add another prescription medication to his regimen.

Is Your Smoke / Carbon Monoxide / Gas Detector REALLY Working?

Our Original "Explosive Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarm"

Do you have one of these or similar “Explosive Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarms” in your condo, home, or RV? Have you tested it? If it screams when tested, does that mean it really works? Will it actually detect propane, butane, or carbon monoxide?

When we purchased our condo unit in Puerto Vallarta, we tested our First Alert Gas/Carbon Monoxide alarm, located under the kitchen range, by pushing the Test / Silence button. It set off a horrendous, alarming shriek. We incorrectly assumed that it would detect these harmful, potentially fatal gases.

We inadvertently put that Gas (Propane) Detector to a true test. I turned a burner on under a pot of water to cook spaghetti noodles. Then Jon and I went outside with glasses of wine to throw the ball for Sophie while we waited for the water to boil.

Thirty minutes later, I went inside to check the pot of water. The flame under the pan had blown out or had never lit, and the apartment was FULL of propane gas! I could smell it, but the Gas Detector had not alerted us. A single spark would have caused an explosion!

Please read more about how we improved our condo's safety at:

10 Healthy Things We Do While Living in Mexico When It's Hot Outside

Day 1

This morning, we ate a delicious, fresh mango with a little cottage cheese. Healthy! I love our fresh mangoes. And we're fortunate to be able to buy cottage cheese here.

Day 2

Spending the Evening at the Roof Garden

Last evening we lounged in the Roof Garden living room, read, enjoyed the view and sunset, took a dip in the pool, and had dinner with Happy Hour drinks.

PAAMUL, QUINTANA ROO: A beautiful place to visit or to retire!

Paamul, A Unique Community for Relaxation...

Jon Relaxes By the Paamul Pool
What in the world is Paamul? Paamul is one of the most unique communities of Expats and snowbirds that we have discovered in Mexico. Some describe it as a “Trailer Park”, but that’s when they want it to sound like a place to avoid. Some describe Paamul as a pristine tropical paradise; that’s when they want to sell your property in this development. I would describe it as a large group of RVs that have been transformed into homes by the stylish addition of walls, palapas (palm roofs), doors, windows, and beautiful gardens. At least, that is how Paamul began, as a place for snowbirds to spend the winter and expats to retire. It has become a resort with a hotel, homes, and RV Park set on a gorgeous white-sand and coral beach on the Caribbean Sea just 15 minutes from the city of Playa del Carmen in the Mayan Riviera of Quintana Roo. It offers the following amenities: A good restaurant overlooking the bay, a very nice, well
Swimming and Snorkeling at Paamul
maintained swimming pool, dive shop, massage, and nail services in an enclosed
palapa, mini-supermarket, Internet, Laundromat, and 24/7 on-site security. Many gringos fly in for vacation or to stay the winter. Others drive to Paamul in their cars or RVs. Mexicans also vacation here, usually staying in hotel rooms.

I have wanted to visit this community from the time I saw photos on the internet of these darling little RV/Houses. Then I discovered the website for selling houses in Paamul. What an interesting idea: a way for Americans and Canadians to “own” a 2 bedroom, 1 ½ bath, fully furnished home on the Caribbean Sea for prices as low as $58,900. The owner actually owns the home itself, not the plot of land, and pays an annual RV space rental amount, much like living in “Trailer Parks” in the U.S. I’m not promoting real estate sales in this area when I tell you that you might want to take a look at the Mayan Mansion website to get an idea of what these RV/Houses look like

and the price ranges. I just find it very interesting! The website address is:
www.mayanmansions.com , then click on Paamul for current listings.
